  2. The subject I picked for this issue before we go to the 
  3. trivia, is Jedi Lightsabers.  I hope this clears up most 
  4. of your confusion about them.  Next Issue, I'll feature 
  5. some info on the ships in the STAR WARS UNIVERSE. 
  6. In this Issue, I focused mainly on the Star Wars Trilogy 
  7. and not the all the other books (Jedi Search, Truce at 
  8. Bakura Etc.) Anyways here it is:

  13.                     For more than a thousand generations, during the 
  14. reign of the Old Republic, a masterfully-trained and 
  15. dedicated order known as the Jedi served as the guardians
  16.  of peace and justice.  Spread across a thousand worlds, they 
  17. brought calm and confidence to the centenzry, who knew 
  18. that few dared to cross the knights of that revered and 
  19. ancient group.  A prime reason for the intense respect the
  20. Jedi had earned was their masterful use of a weapon they 
  21. themselves had created - the Lightsaber.
  22.                     The Lightsaber is a product of an ancient, once 
  23. forgotten technology.  It is an exquisite weapon, one that 
  24. flows and moves as its master moves.  The skillful 
  25. wielding of its legendary blade was considered the true 
  26. mark of a Jedi, right up until the reign of Emperor 
  27. Palpatine and his Empire began--at which time, the Jedi 
  28. were hunted down and elimated.
  29.                             While the order of the Jedi is all but extinct, a few of 
  30. their elegant weapons remain.  One Lightsaber, 
  31. constructed by Anakin Skywalker,  belonged to the last of 
  32. the Jedi, Luke Skywalker.  Anakin Skywalker's 'saber was 
  33. roughly 34-30 centimeters long and featured a handle 
  34. body of polished durasteel. An inner shell contained the 
  35. incredible energies generated within, without 
  36. transmitting their heat to the device's outer surfaces. 
  37. (Luke Skywalker lost his father's Lightsaber during 
  38. combat on Bespin, at the expense of his right hand--lost 
  39. to the blade of the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader.)
  40.                             Using what he had learned from the detailed 
  41. examination (and skilled use) of his father's Lightsaber, 
  42. Luke Skywalker, like all Jedi before him, built his 
  43. replacement Lightsaber himself.  This new, self-built unit
  44. shares those elements common to all 'sabers:  It houses a 
  45. power cell within the handgrip; crystallite lenses are 
  46. faceted to perfection; focusing core channels the intense 
  47. energy of the cell into a coherent beam that bends 
  48. circumferentally back upon itself to create a cutting 
  49. "blade."
  50.                                 A Lightsaber can be wielded properly only after years 
  51. of extensive training and disciplined use. The Jedi, it is 
  52. told, could deflect blaster bolts and particle beams by the 
  53. skilled use of their blades. Often the mere sight of the 
  54. intensely-luminous blade and the unique, indescribable 
  55. hum of that same blade slicing the air served to scatter 
  56. most opposition.
